What tool do you use to tool leather? ›

You don't need hundreds of dollars worth of leather working tools. Start small. The real essentials, in my opinion, are a swivel knife, a background tool, and a mallet or hammer of some kind. A shader of some kind is nice, too, but in a pinch you can use a spoon or anything with a flat to it.

While you can carve leather with various tools, the three most commonly used are swivel knives, styluses, and stamps. Swivel knives are the most defining carving tool, creating thick, deep lines that the other tools build off of. Stamps and styluses are great tools for adding detail, further improving a carving design.

Burnisher and Slicker Tools

Burnisher and slicker tools are a package deal – you use them to finish leather edges. You can smooth out or “burnish” leather through friction. This heat strengthens and hardens the leather and ensures no hanging fibers.
