@lazlodaytona - Yes why would one of the most populer franchises of all time, which consistently has fans and had billion dollar movies in the past, still be a thing?

lazlodaytona -7/14/2024,4:20 PM

@TheRogue - Same reason the Jurassic Park franchise does. or Star War films.

Sure, they make money so these fat-head, money grubbing executives and bosses can get even fatter with wealth because they know, how bad the films have gotten, nostalgic fans and little kids will flock to the films anyway while dragging their parents, friends, cousins/family, and the curious will still come.
Caring about the true, educated-on-the subject fans who care deeply of these franchises is just not a thing for them to do.

I get that, but I'm tired of franchises that started out epic (Terminator, Robocop, Superman, Ninja Turtles, The 1st Batman Burton/Schumacher films, Aliens, Predator, and so on) just keep declining but still try to keep moving on; successful or not.

TheRogue -7/14/2024,4:31 PM

@lazlodaytona - I would rather the chance we get movies like bumblebee or this (Which does seem to have heart and care for the franchise) over worse movies like bay. Leaving it there would feel like bay killed it.

@THEKENDOMAN @tylerzero @lazlodaytona @TheRogue - One thing that you guys might not be aware of is that this year marks the 40th anniversary of Transformers, so Hasbro, Takara-Tomy, et al are going all out celebrating this milestone for the brand, with special figures, packaging, advertising, tie-ins, conventions (they'll be at SDCC), etc. and this movie will be a major piece of that, being as this movie is an animated film that goes back to the origins of the TFs. So super brand synergy here. Now how good the movie ends up being is anyone's guess (although test screenings have ben very positive). But if you're asking "Why?", well there's your "Why?". 😊

@StSteven - I didn't know this mate, but from the post, you can tell I dont care either. But it does answer the question of why.

However, I have been contemplating watching all the Transformers movies from the beginning to get into it, but I just havent had the push.

But thanks for clarifying 👊

@THEKENDOMAN @tylerzero - Sure thing. I'm a huge TF fan (have been since the 80s). I've got the Decepticon symbol tattoo on my shoulder and a spare bedroom full of them MISB from 2006 on (pre-2006 are in storage boxes in my parents basem*nt which I slowly bring back with me whenever I visit, NOT MISB sadly). One of these days I'll post some pics for anyone who's interested, as my TF room is becoming something like a canyon that you kind of have to wind your way through.

Anyhow, glad I'm not the only 80s kid TF geek on this site 😊. As for the TF movies, given everything I said above, I'm understandably going to be partial to them, no matter how goofy and continuity-confusing they get (and they get progressively goofier and more continuity-confusing as they go), but the first one was like a childhood dream come true for me, and then they get progressively further away from what I loved about that movie but still highly entertaining, for me anyway. "Bumblebee" was a return to form and I'm assuming is still one of everyone's favorites given that they're STILL making figures of the opening sequence on Cybertron (even ones that only existed as concept art and never actually made it into the movie like Megatron and Rumble), and then RotB was pretty good as well but again the continuity issues are kinda glaring, although any hard-core TF fan can come up with explanations if they try hard enough 😉.

StSteven -7/15/2024,4:25 PM

@THEKENDOMAN - Haha, will do. Yeah, I mean, I was 8 when TFs first came out and what 8 year old DOESN'T love the idea of giant alien robots that can hide amongst us disguised as everyday items? Plus I was always a HUGE dinosaur fan (I seriously gave a lecture on dinosaurs to my preschool (pre-kindergarten) class), so when the Dinobots came out I was in kid-Heaven (Grimlock is still my favorite and I have the Robosen auto-transforming figure (still in the box, of course): https://us.robosen.com/products/flagship-grimlock.

Here's a fun fact for you: TFs actually started a couple of years before 1984 in Japan as a handful of different toy lines, but mainly Microman and Diaclone. Microman were the toys that were robots disguised as smaller objects, so that's where you got characters like Megatron and Soundwave who were originally a handgun and Walkman, respectively. Diaclone were cars and other vehicles that were operated by little drivers but weren't sentient. So Hasbro kinda mashed the 2 together and ta-da! Transformers. Then Bob Budiansky (a writer at Marvel (who had the TFS license) at the time came up with the names, personalities, and backstories for the characters and pretty much the whole TFs lore when they released the TFs comics (which I have all of either as originals or reprints).

BTW, if you want to dig into the TFS comics at any point I would highly recommend the IDW runs (except the very last one as that one was kinda slow). Particularly the "More Than Meets the Eye" -> "The Lost Light" and "Robots in Disguise" -> "Transformers" runs. I'm not kidding, the art and stories there are SO good they can make a grown man tear up at times (especially the former).

Anyhow, a good resource (other than me, of course 😉) is this place: https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Main_Page. It's like a TFs encyclopedia with a sense of humor. Oh, and if you haven't seen the 1986 animated "Transformers: The Movie" that should be your first stop as it's the gold standard for TFs movies (it will be interesting to see how this new one compares). Otherwise feel free to hit me up with any questions you might have. Obviously I LOVE to talk about this sh*t. Til all are one! 😊

@THEKENDOMAN - No I do not :) . Comments on T2: The Ice Cream twins are annoying, Devastator (the Construction combiner) is f**king badass, and Prime is the GOAT.

BTW if you want a better explanation of who the Fallen is and how he figures into TF lore let me know or check that tfwiki site. He's actually a pretty interesting guy. One of the original 13 Primes (there's a significance to that number - I'll let you figure it out). Enjoy!

The more kid or family friendly vibe isn’t gonna be for everyone but it looks fun imo.

Plus as we saw in the trailers , it seems like there is a more serious or darker turn it could take in this or the future since they have said that there is a trilogy planned.

@TheVisionary25 - I feel like it’s too late for this one. This should’ve rolled out in between the first two Transformers movies.

TheVisionary25 -7/14/2024,3:15 PM

@WruceBayne - huh?

I’m pretty sure this is set in its own continuity

Login to report abuse

WruceBayne -7/14/2024,3:19 PM

@TheVisionary25 - yeah, I get that. I’m not saying keep it in the live action continuity, I’m saying that the interest in an origin story is fading the further you get from the original film.

Login to report abuse

TheVisionary25 -7/14/2024,3:24 PM

@WruceBayne - but there is no original film in this continuity

Also there have been many different versions of Transformers that have dealt with the origin so this is just one more.

WruceBayne -7/14/2024,3:35 PM

@TheVisionary25 - in my own personal opinion, that’s why I feel we don’t we need one. That’s like telling the origin story of Batman or Spider-Man, we all know how they got to where they are.

@WruceBayne - not necessarily

I think it’s fine

StSteven -7/14/2024,5:58 PM

@TheVisionary25 @WruceBayne - So, yes, according to the producer (Di Bonaventura) this is planned as a trilogy that essentially is in the same continuity as the movies and leads up to the first live action TF movie (although "continuity" is sort of a loose term in the TF universe, even admitted to by Di Bonaventura). So I kind of look at this planned trilogy as being like the Star Wars prequel series, which will inevitably end with a scene similar to the end of "Revenge of the Sith" with Prime fighting Megatron as a sort of "brother vs. brother" thing. Where that happens in this trilogy happens, I don't know. Could even happen at the end of this first movie.

As far as the vibe goes, I understand that the trailers and now this clip so far make it seem like it's fairly lighthearted (which I'm sure it is for a good portion of the movie), kinda like the Super Mario Bros. movie (which isn't surprising considering how much money that movie made). But the early test screenings (which have all been very positive) indicate that it does indeed have it's darker, more serious parts, which I'm guessing happen between Prime and Megatron (you kinda get a hint of that in this clip where Megs wants to turn and fight where as Prime wants to keep running).. So we might get that "Anakin vs. Obi Wan" moment by the end of this film. I just don't expect Prime to slice off Megatron's arms and legs and leave him for dead. But you never know 😉.

Kinda feels dragged out and trying too hard to be comedic with the same joke for about a minute of screentime - and it's not even the full sequence of them messing around while Transforming/fleeing.
