Panthers make moves to get to initial 53-man roster (2024)

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers made a series of roster moves Tuesday to get to the 53-man roster limit.

While there were some notable names on the list, including wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., but it's important to note that the remaining 53 players should not be considered a final roster.

The Panthers have the first spot in waiver claim order and are expected to use it in the coming days to bring in players who were waived today.

As expected, the Panthers left running back Jonathon Brooks on the reserve/non-football injury list and outside linebackers D.J. Wonnum and Amaré Barno on reserve/physically unable to perform. That rules those three out for at least the first four weeks of the season.

They also placed cornerback Dane Jackson and safety Sam Franklin Jr. on injured reserve with return designations, meaning they can come back this season. In the past, teams had to carry players through cuts to 53 if they wanted them to return from IR, but the rule was changed this year to allow two to go on the list today. Teams can designate a maximum of eight players to return from IR over the course of the year. You can read a full explanation of the rules here.

Linebacker Tae Davis and outside linebacker Cam Gill were placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Among the veterans who were released Tuesday were running back Mike Boone and tight end Jordan Matthews.
