Does anyone out there know how many 87 or 88 Monte Carlo SS's were built with black exterior and saddle (tan) interior? They seem to be pretty rare, I have only ever seen two on the road. If someone out there has one and is the original owner, was the car custom ordered from GM or was did you find the car on a dealer lot? One more question -- Has anyone ever seen an Aerocoupe with this color combination? In my opinion, the gold stripes on the outside look much better that the red.

It really isnt rare, just compared to the much more common burgandy interior and lesser extent gray interior it seems rare. There is no reason a dealer wouldnt order one, but perhaps most were customer ordered. Seems alot of SSs were customer ordered(2 of the 3 Ive owned have been).

Ive personally seen 6 SSs with saddle interior around here, 3 were Aerocoupes. One black/saddle/t-top Aero, white/saddle mint Aero, black/saddle Aero(guy was a member on this message board since sold it), a black/saddle SS a lady drives around here locally, another black/saddle/t-tops is local I see a guy drive around, and Ive seen another black/saddle one. There was also a black/saddle/t-top one for sale on ebay close to me about a month or so back.

Rare would be one of the saddle interior SSs with in burgandy metallic or light metallic brown.

HTH. :).

it's rare. if it wasn't you would see alot more of them. 70% to 75% of all SS's i've seen have maroon interior. you see a little more of the gray interior than the saddle. a buddy of mine owns a junkyard and out of 11 SS's one has saddle. he goes to the auctions every week and he said he hardly ever see's saddle interior. look on any web site for SS's and you might see a SS with saddle int. every once in awhile. it's a matter of opinion about being rare. look for saddle interior parts you'll see. of course mine's saddle.

Thanks for the info. Maybe the black/saddle combination isn't rare, but pretty uncommon. If I would try and make a quess at how many were built, I would probably say only 2 or 3% of total production for 87 and 88, if even that. They only made about 6,000 aerocoupes and I see aerocoupes all the time, but I almost never see black/saddle SS's. So maybe a reasonable guess at how many black/saddle SS's were built would be 1000, since they made about 55,000 SS's between 87 and 88.

Well, Ive seen 2 black/saddle Aeros alone, hehe. Its obviously the most "rare" interior color, white/saddle is probably half as common as black/saddle or even 1/3 as many. Maybe its just a little more common around here...out of 55,000 87/88s Im guessing 3,000 or so had saddle interiors. 1/20 maybe? Black/Saddle is maybe the most sharp combo, :). Especially with the gold stripes to accent it.

and to add to what's already been said. they only made 88 SS's for 3 months. and there were only 16,204 SS's built for 88. i know some say there really 87's but there titled 88's. for the info i've been able to find mine was built in Nov. of 87. i know they built them until Dec. i guess you could say they were uncommon not rare. i like having a SS that you don't see very often.

I agree that the black/saddle was the best available color combination. I can only hope to find one in good original condition for sale. Did I mention that I wanted a posi car without T-tops. That's a pretty tall order, I guess I will just have to be patient until the right one comes along.

COttewell,

I've got two saddled interiored 87 SS's. One is white and saddle, the other is black and saddle.

The black one is wrecked, bought it from CoPartfinder from a salvage yard in NY State. It is a posi car, bucket seat car, lay down spoiler, with a 350 Goodwrench replacement engine.

The white one is a bench seat car, upright spoiler, with all original drivetrain, although it is tired. Neither of them have T-tops, although the black one does have a sun-roof, possibly dealer installed? I know they did not come that way. It's a nice installation however.

Neither of them are much of anything right now. The plan is to put the drivetrain and interior from the black one into the white one. I was going to paint the car black with the original gold stripes, but everyone tells me to keep it white. Dunno? I prefer the black and saddle over the white and saddle. I did not know that they had different gold stripes until I researched them.

The white one has an interesting story, I wrote about it in the my SS section some time ago. Hopefully I'll be able to work on these soon. It's a shame, but the black one took a hard hit to the front and the frame is bent and the roof is buckled slightly above the B-pillars. It runs like a bear though, and the interior is pretty good. It was owned by a girl who couldn't drive I suppose. The white one is tired but the body is usable. I think I'll need a door or two however. Might be able to use the doors off of the black one, although they are dinged up. It's a matter of rust vs. dings. Gotta love playing with "old" cars.

I see your close to me in Bel Air, I'm in North East. Small world, huh?

Talk to ya later.

Although I am partial to the beautiful blue on blue 84 SS of course Black / Saddle 87/88 SS's (38) , I gotta say if I had to choose another color I would go with a black car / saddle interior and the gold accenting stripes and decals. Really looks nice!

I don't know how serious you are about buying one or how much you would want to spend for the "right one" but take a look at this. Black/Saddle Aero

I don't know where they got the production numbers and I have no affiliation with them, just passing along the link. Black / Saddle 87/88 SS's (47)

Jonesy 25,

Thanks for the link to the black/gold Monte for sale. It's quite a bit out of my price range. Also, I like the notchback's better than the aerocoupes. The production numbers are a bunch a B. S., gives the seller less credibility. What I am hoping to find is a rust free black/saddle car with a decent interior that hasn't been tampered with too much. I don't mind if somebody changed the radio or the exhaust. But I don't want something with a aftermarket sunroof, cowl hood, engine or tranny swap, etc. I don't care too much about the miles. Such a car might be worth $5000 or $6000 to me. Like I said, I'll just be patient until the "right one" comes up for sale. I would prefer a posi car without t-tops -- but maybe this is getting too picky. Sooner or later one will show up for sale.

2 Monte SS,

Good to hear about your Monte Carlo. Best I can tell, nobody out here in Harford County has a saddle interior SS. Or if they do, they don't drive it. There used to be a guy who raced a black/saddle SS at Cecil County Dragway on Friday nights. His car was a bit of a beater, the paint was faded real bad. He ran 14's. Go ahead and paint that white SS black and put the light gold stripes on. Since it has a non-original sunroof, it's not completely original anyway. You could probably find some doors off a regular Monte Carlo at Crazy Ray's pull it yourself junkyards -- in Jessup and Baltimore. It's a pain driving down there to see if they have what you need, but they have a lot of cars there, and they crush alot, so they are always bringing in new stuff.

Chuck

Another color combo that I think is at least as rare, and maybe more, is burgandy/gray. Not too many of these around, although a few on the internet and the board I know of. Ive only seen one ever around here, a 86 with t-tops. Black / Saddle 87/88 SS's (56)

Id like to get my hands on a Maroon/Gold Aerocoupe. That'd be a tough decision, black and gold, or maroon and gold. Hmm...

In person, I haven't ever seen another saddle interior except mine. I barely see any aerocoupes around here, either. Although, one night at a gas station I saw a Maroon/Grey Aerocoupe. It wasn't in very good shape, though. I think I remember him saying that he raced it. I don't think he lives around here because I haven't ever seen him around except for then.

i have seen 1 of the montes that you are asking about. i sopld it a few months ago. it was parts only the front end was totaled. i also saw a red monte with a bench seats and a colum shifter. this was really rare i had never heard of it before i was astonished. it was hit in the rear the bumper was totaled but the plastic skin was fine. all it had was one flet tire too. im thinking of making an offer. its sat there for a couple years. i thought tis was really rare and i might fix and sell. i have heard of non ss montes with these fetures but never an SS. if anyone has heard of these let me know. thanks a lot. the black with saddel was totaled and not worth the money to fix. might be ina a junkyard around here i sold it for the motor.

Bench seat in a SS is not rare, its the standard way they came, buckets were an option.

As far as red, no red SS was ever made factory. The "rare" color combos are 87/88 brown/saddle, 87/88 burgandy saddle, 87/88 white/saddle, 85-88 burgandy/gray, 87/88 black/saddle...after that nothing is really rare color wise. White/gray seems to be not so common either....but not rare. Black/burgandy most common?
